Fostering Resilience in Uncertain Times

Audience: Classroom Teachers

Overview

It is still too early to fully know or comprehend the impact that the COVID-19 crisis will have on our students and communities, but what we do know is that people and communities can be amazingly resilient and have the capacity to adapt to extreme stress and adversity when certain core protective systems are in place and being supported. This session will provide teachers with knowledge and understanding of resilience and trauma and how they can, through their everyday teaching, foster those protective factors that can help students weather and, eventually, bounce back from the current crisis. Teachers will receive practical tools, ideas, and activities which can be used to foster resilience in the context of physical distancing and online learning, and, when schools open back up, in the context of classroom learning. This session will also address the importance of self-care and help teachers to identify practical ways in which they can take care of themselves so that they can then take care of their students.

Overview

Tier I School Culture Audit

Audience: Principal, Culture Leadership Team, Selected Teachers

Overview

During normal school operations, leaders often face the challenge of spending too much time on misbehavior. A “revolving door” of office referrals steals time from other critical, more proactive work. This period of school closures due to COVID-19 is a prime opportunity to rethink systems for when students return. Through a series of virtual meetings, a Kickboard School Culture Coach will conduct a comprehensive review of adult mindsets, consistent systems, and data practices. Kickboard will gather evidence through teacher and leader interviews, a leader self-assessment, an analysis of behavior data, and other written evidence of culture systems. School leaders will then receive actionable recommendations for improvement based on this audit of your Tier I culture systems.

Overview

Studies have shown that a large majority of U.S. school leaders understand their school culture is adversely affecting academic success but they don’t know what steps to take to improve. During a series of virtual meetings, a Kickboard coach will guide the team to collaboratively create a vision for schoolwide culture excellence based on their shared beliefs. The team will then develop explicit culture goals and an aligned strategic action plan to guide their work. The coach will also facilitate the team in planning specifics for creating a positive school culture which may include developing schoolwide behavior expectations, common area behavior matrices, and plans for stakeholder investment. Planning work considers where each school is on the journey and helps guide them forward.

They will also define an exact protocol for teachers to follow when corrective action is necessary and a negative consequence is earned. Kickboard will provide proven best practices and lead the group to create a plan that ensures focus on positive achievements throughout the year.

Overview

During this virtual offering, leaders and teachers will be empowered as the agents of change necessary to achieve a positive school culture. In separate asynchronous courses, teachers will first increase their knowledge and understanding of resilience and trauma and how they can, through their everyday teaching, foster those protective factors that can help students succeed. Staff will also learn strategies and gain resources for defining and explicitly teaching behaviors with children. Teachers will then learn the software tools that will help them reinforce positive choices with students.
