Why is it Important to Become a Trauma-Informed School?
Research shows that as many as two out of every three students have been exposed to at least one traumatic or adverse event. One out of two students has experienced two or more traumatic events.
Traumatic and adverse events such as physical and sexual abuse, growing up with a parent with substance dependence, having a loved one incarcerated, or living in an unsafe neighborhood can impact development, affecting areas of the brain that regulate impulse control, executive and cognitive functioning, and emotional and fear responses. Exposure can also lead to a significantly higher risk for many of the leading causes of death including heart disease, cancer, respiratory diseases, diabetes, and suicide and can reduce life expectancy by 20 years (CDC, 2019).
